Dog probiotic guide: Nana beside a bowl of Probiotic Bites

How to Choose a Dog Probiotic: Strains, CFU and Timing - A Hong Kong Gut Health Guide

The short answer: not every dog needs a probiotic every day - but five situations make it well worth it: changing food, finishing a course of antibiotics, a dog that scavenges on every walk, before and after boarding, and senior dogs. When you choose, look for three things on the ingredients panel: a named strain (DE111® or Bacillus coagulans, for instance), spore form (stands up to stomach acid and to Hong Kong damp) and a prebiotic (FOS / inulin). Dose by weight, start on half for the first few days, and give it 2-4 weeks before assessing the results. Blood in the stools, ongoing vomiting or a flat, listless dog is not a probiotic matter - see a vet.

'Dog probiotics' is one of the questions we get most - but owners ask for different reasons. Some have a dog with soft stools after a food change, some have a dog with an upset stomach after eating something off the pavement, some have a dog whose poo hasn't firmed up since the vet's course of antibiotics, and some just want to top things up. This piece isn't a lecture on what probiotics are. It starts from where your dog is right now: a quick self-check first, then how to read the poo, read the ingredients panel, pick a format and feed by situation, and finally where to buy and how to store it.

First, a self-check: does your dog need a probiotic?

  • ☐ Changing food right now, or planning to within a month
  • ☐ Has had antibiotics in the past two months (commonly given for skin problems, sore ears, or surgery)
  • ☐ Scavenges constantly on walks, or gets slipped human food at home
  • ☐ Heading for boarding / a house move / a new family member (human, dog or cat)
  • ☐ Over 7 years old, eating normally but the stools are turning soft
  • ☐ Stools that are soft one day and hard the next, unusually smelly, plus lots of gas or bad breath

Two ticks or more and a probiotic is worth trying. Nothing ticked and good-looking poo every day? No rush - that money goes further on better food.

The poo tells you what the gut is doing

No lab work needed: the moment you pick it up each day is the best health check you get. Plenty of vets use a 1-7 faecal scoring chart; this article uses five levels, a different scale from our seven-point stool tool:

Level What it looks like What it means What to do
1 Hard, dry pellets that scatter Not enough water, not enough fibre, or not enough exercise More water and more fibre (pumpkin does the job); a probiotic is not the point here
2 Log-shaped and moist, and easy to pick up cleanly The ideal Keep it up; a daily probiotic is fine as general upkeep
3 Formed but soft, sticks to the ground when you pick it up Mild imbalance in the gut flora - a food change, scavenging or stress are the usual causes The level where a probiotic earns its keep, given daily for 2-4 weeks
4 Shapeless, in blobs The gut is clearly unsettled Probiotic plus a look at the diet; more than 3 days of it and you need a vet
5 Watery, with mucus or blood Infection, parasites, or something it should not have eaten Straight to the vet, and do not rely on a probiotic instead of veterinary care

For senior dogs and puppies, level 4 already means calling the vet sooner - they dehydrate fast.

Three things on the ingredients panel: a named strain, spore form, a prebiotic

You don't need to memorise a table of species. Turn the pack over and look for three things:

  • A strain it can name - DE111® (Bacillus subtilis), Bacillus coagulans, Saccharomyces boulardii. If it only says 'probiotic' or 'lactic acid bacteria' with no strain, nobody can tell you what is actually in there.
  • Spore form - Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus coagulans come as spores, which stand up to stomach acid and stay stable at room temperature. That matters in Hong Kong damp, and given how strong dog stomach acid is. Lactobacillus types are not bad, but check the packaging has some technology for keeping them alive.
  • A prebiotic - FOS, inulin, pumpkin fibre. This is food for the good bacteria; a formula with a prebiotic gives them a steadier place to settle.

CFU (the live count) only needs to be stated. Around 1 billion a day is plenty for everyday dog use; what makes the difference is the three points above, not who printed the bigger number. For a dog on antibiotics at the same time, pick a formula with Saccharomyces boulardii - it is a yeast rather than a bacterium, so antibiotics don't kill it.

Chews or powder? And how do you work out the amount for a big dog versus a small one?

Chews (chewable bites) Powder (sprinkled on food)
How to give it Hand it over as a snack; works on walks and in training Sprinkle over the food and stir in; dry food needs a splash of water, or wet food to help it stick
Amount By weight: up to 11kg - 1 chew daily, 12-34kg - 2 chews daily, over 34kg - 3 chews daily 1 packet or 1 scoop a day, no weight calculation
Best suited to Fussy dogs (bacon / pumpkin / chicken flavour), dogs you take out, anyone who wants to use it as a reward Big dogs (no need for 3 chews), clever dogs that spot anything medicinal, anyone who wants single-serve freshness
Watch out for It counts as a snack in the daily calories; the feeding calculator deducts it for you Dry-food-only dogs need a splash of water; after opening, screw the lid down tight and keep it away from heat and damp

Nana's tip

For dogs sensitive to chicken, go for the pumpkin flavour probiotic chews - there is no chicken on the ingredients list. With any probiotic, start on half the amount, and only move up to the label serving after 3-4 days with no trouble.

Nana eyeing two bowls, old food and new: a food change goes in slowly

Four situations, four ways to feed it

① Changing food: a seven-day food-transition chart with probiotic guidance

Day Old food New food Probiotic
3 days before the change 100% — Start feeding daily
Days 1-2 75% 25% Daily
Days 3-4 50% 50% Daily
Days 5-6 25% 75% Daily
Day 7 onwards — 100% Carry on another 1-2 weeks, then stop or switch to upkeep

If the poo reaches level 4 partway through, hold at that ratio for another two days instead of pushing on.

② After a course of antibiotics

You can start during the course itself, but keep it 2-3 hours apart from the antibiotic (tablet in the morning, probiotic with dinner, for example). Carry on for another 2 weeks after the course finishes, so the gut flora can rebuild.

③ Boarding, moving house, travel

Start a week before and keep going a week after. Send it with your dog to the boarding kennels - single-serve powder packets or a small jar of chews are easy for kennel staff to measure and give.

④ Everyday upkeep for senior dogs

Digestion naturally gets weaker past 7, so a daily probiotic as a base makes sense long term. There are versions built for senior dogs, with the strains and other nutrients already put together, so you don't have to combine things yourself. What counts as senior? The age converter works it out by body size.

Hong Kong is damp: how to store a probiotic, and where to buy

Live cultures hate heat and damp. A Hong Kong summer will hit 30 degrees indoors at 80% humidity, so four things to watch when buying and storing: ① check the batch expiry date - the live count drops over time, so fresher is better; ② buy through an authorised channel, where someone is accountable for shipping and storage; ③ after opening, screw the lid down tight and keep it in a cool cupboard, not on the kitchen windowsill or under the air conditioner; ④ single-serve powder packets are the safest bet in damp weather.

Five situations a probiotic won't help with - see a vet

  • Stools with blood in them, or black and tarry
  • Vomiting more than twice in a day, or refusing water afterwards
  • Watery diarrhoea for more than 24 hours (12 hours for puppies and senior dogs)
  • A bloated belly, refusing food, low energy, fever
  • Soft stools that go more than two weeks with no improvement - it could be parasites, a food sensitivity or a pancreatic issue, and a faecal test is needed

Keep worming on schedule, don't feed anything too greasy, and introduce new food gradually. Do those three and a lot of 'bad stomach' stories are already half sorted. Skin and gut are closely linked, so if your dog is itchy, read what to do about an itchy dog as well. Cat owners: how to choose a cat probiotic (cat and dog formulas differ, so don't swap them).

Common questions

Can a dog stay on probiotics long term?

Yes. A probiotic is everyday support rather than medication, and plenty of owners feed one daily as a base. A dog with no gut trouble can also use it only around food changes, travel and courses of antibiotics.

Can a dog have a human probiotic?

Not advisable. The strains, doses and formulas in human products (sometimes with sweeteners such as xylitol, which dogs must not have) are not designed for dogs. Stick to something labelled for dogs.

When is the best time to give a dog probiotic?

Consistency matters most - the same time each day, alongside a meal, is easiest to remember. If antibiotics are involved, feed it 2 to 3 hours apart from them.

How long before you see anything?

Usually 2 to 4 weeks of daily feeding before assessing the results the stools and the appetite. If a whole month brings no difference at all, or the diarrhoea gets worse along the way, take the product details to your vet.

Chews or powder - which is better?

Both formats are intended to support digestive health, so pick the one your dog will actually eat. Fussy dogs and dogs you take out: chews. Big dogs, clever dogs, and anyone who wants single-serve packets: powder over the food.
