Dog itching troubleshooter: answer a few questions to find what could be behind all that itching

Paw-licking, body scratching, ear scratching? Itching could come from a skin condition, parasites, environmental sensitivity, food sensitivity or very dry skin - and each one needs a different approach. Answer step by step to get possible causes, next steps, and when to see your vet.

Step 1

Any of these on the skin? Sores / broken skin, round patches of hair loss, scabs or black crusts, a strong smell, red swelling with discharge

Any fleas, small black specks (flea dirt), or extra itching around the tail base / lower back?

When is the itching worst?

Where is the itching mainly?

Any of these too: recurring ear inflammation, unsettled gut (soft stool / lots of gas), or extra itching after certain treats?

How often do you bathe your dog? Is the air con on all the time at home?

Why rule out skin conditions and parasites first

Supplements, shampoos and food swaps only do something for sensitivity and dry skin. If it is actually a fungal or bacterial infection or fleas, none of that helps and it just delays proper veterinary care. That is why steps 1 and 2 always ask about sores and parasites first - if yes, go straight to your vet; if no, then we sort out environment versus food. Hong Kong sits above 80% humidity for most of the year, so environmental sensitivity (dust mites, mould) is a common cause of itching. Itching all year round plus recurring ear inflammation points more towards food sensitivity. For the full breakdown, a checklist for your home environment and how an elimination diet works, see What to do when your dog has sensitive skin and keeps itching.

Screenshot every result with the date, and log when and where the itching happens for two weeks straight. At the vet, those notes are worth more than any description.

FAQ

My dog has no fleas and no skin condition but keeps scratching - why?

It often comes from environmental sensitivity (dust mites, mould, pollen), food sensitivity, very dry skin or bathing too often. Start with the environment and the food, and if it keeps up for more than two weeks, see your vet for an allergy assessment.

How long do skin supplements take to show a difference?

Skin renewal takes time, so give it 4 to 8 weeks before judging, and keep the environment controls going at the same time. If there is no difference at all after two months, stop switching brands and see your vet for allergy testing.

Immune support or skin support - which supplement do I pick?

Itching when the seasons change, plus paw-licking and body scratching, points to immune support (EpiCor® type). Dry skin all year, lots of flaking and a dull coat points to skin support (Omega-3 + zinc + biotin). If both apply, pair one chew formula with fish oil, but do not double up on the same kind of Omega.
