Choosing a dog probiotic: everyday support for soft stools, bad breath and upset stomachs during food changes
Soft stools, bad breath, fussy eating, an upset stomach every time you change food - a lot of the time that's gut flora out of balance. A dog probiotic helps the gut flora stay balanced and supports normal digestion and immune function; it is not medicine for diarrhoea. The Zesty Paws gut range comes as chews or powder, and what matters when choosing is the strains, the CFU count, and whether your dog will eat it.
Pick by the situation
- Everyday care, food changes, travel - Probiotic Bites: the Gut First™ three-strain blend (Bacillus coagulans, Bacillus subtilis, Saccharomyces boulardii), 3 billion CFU per chew, with FOS prebiotic and pumpkin. Dogs take it like a snack, which makes it the easiest dog probiotic to feed. There's no chicken on the pumpkin flavour's ingredient list, so it's the one to pick if you're avoiding chicken.
- For the dog who finds the pill hidden in the cheese - Probiotic Powder (for dogs): DE111® clinically studied Bacillus subtilis (800 million CFU per packet) + Saccharomyces boulardii + inulin fibre, pumpkin flavoured, sprinkled over the food and stirred in. The 30 single-serve packets travel well, and the 150 g jar is better value for daily use.
- Over 7, with digestion slowing down - Senior Advanced Probiotic Bites: DE111® + PreforPro® prebiotic, plus a five-strain lactobacillus blend. Soft chews that are easy for older dogs to eat.
- The poop-eating habit - Chew No Poo Bites: slow-release capsicum extract helps make stools less appealing to dogs, while probiotic strains and digestive enzymes support the gut. In a multi-dog household, feed it to all of them.
- Yellow patches all over the lawn - Stay Green Bites: DL-methionine to balance the nitrogen level in urine, cranberry to support the urinary tract, and prebiotic plus two Bacillus strains for the gut.
Look at the strains before you look at the CFU
With CFU (the live count), higher isn't automatically better - the strains matter more. DE111® (Bacillus subtilis) and Saccharomyces boulardii are the hardy sort: they stand up to stomach acid and heat, and only go to work once they reach the gut. That's also why the Zesty Paws probiotic powder keeps at room temperature and survives being sprinkled over food. If you want to go deeper, we unpack the myths around strains and CFU in our cat probiotics guide, and the same label-reading principles apply to dog probiotics.
Common questions
How long before you notice anything?
Feed it daily for 1 to 2 weeks and stool consistency usually starts to settle. If the loose stools carry on, there's blood in them, or your dog seems off, see your vet first; a probiotic is the everyday support that comes after your vet has had a look.
Can I give my dog human probiotics?
We don't suggest it. Human products use strains and doses designed around human guts, while dog-specific formulas such as DE111® have canine research behind them.
Can the chews and the powder be fed together?
One or the other is enough, no need to feed both. Use the chews for a fussy dog; use the powder if your dog won't chew or you'd rather mix it into the food.
