Choosing a joint supplement for your dog: glucosamine, green lipped mussel or turmeric?
Can't get up on the sofa any more, hesitates at the top of the stairs, needs a minute to warm up after a nap - these may be signs of reduced joint comfort or mobility. Joint care doesn't have to wait until your dog is old: large breeds, very active dogs and dogs aged 7 and over are all better off starting early than late. The Zesty Paws joint range has four options built around different ingredients. The dearest one isn't automatically the right one; it depends on the dog in front of you.
What separates the four joint chews
- Hip & Joint Mobility Bites - the classic trio: glucosamine HCl + chondroitin sulfate + OptiMSM®, plus vitamins C and E, supporting joint cartilage and connective tissue. The default pick for everyday care in adult dogs, and the bacon flavour is a bacon-flavoured option to try if your dog is fussy.
- Green Lipped Mussel Bites - 300 mg of cold-processed New Zealand green lipped mussel per chew, which naturally contains glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). No glucosamine, chondroitin or MSM - a short, simple formula, so this is the one if you'd rather skip shellfish-derived glucosamine or just want fewer ingredients.
- Senior Advanced Hip & Joint Bites - a broader joint-support formula for senior dogs: glucosamine + chondroitin + OptiMSM® as the backbone, then green lipped mussel, turmeric extract (Qmin+™), BioPerine® black pepper extract and hyaluronic acid. If you want one jar to cover an older dog's joints, this is it.
- Turmeric Curcumin Bites - curcumin paired with BioPerine® to help absorption, supporting joints, digestion and immune function at the same time. Good for dogs where you want to look after more than the joints.
When to start, and how long before you see anything?
Zesty Paws suggests feeding daily for at least 2 weeks, then keeping it going as everyday care. A joint supplement provides daily joint support - it is not medicine. If your dog is already limping, favouring a leg or too sore to move, see your vet first; supplements are the everyday support that comes after your vet has had a look. Feeding goes by weight: Up to 11 kg - 1 chew daily, 12-34 kg - 2 chews daily, Over 34 kg - 3 chews daily. For the first few days, start with half the amount.
Common questions
What's the difference between glucosamine and green lipped mussel?
Glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM are a combination of cartilage building blocks; green lipped mussel is a single whole food that brings its own GAGs and omega-3. Pick one or the other - we don't suggest mixing two jars to push the dose up.
Do small dogs need joint support?
They do. A slipping kneecap (luxating patella) is common in poodles, pomeranians and chihuahuas, so everyday joint support is worth starting early. By weight, 1 chew a day is enough.
Which one is easiest to feed?
They're all soft chews, so feed them straight or crumble them into food. For a fussy dog, start with the bacon-flavoured Hip & Joint Mobility Bites - that's a flavour to try if your dog is fussy.
Want to look after the gut and immune health too? Have a look at the 8-in-1 Multivitamin - glucosamine + chondroitin are already in there. NanaPaws is an authorised Zesty Paws retailer in Hong Kong, and the batch and expiry date are listed on every product page.
