Itchy dog, constant paw licking: start through immune support or the skin?
Paw licking, twisting to get at an itch, skin that flares the moment the season turns - a lot of the time this isn't a surface skin problem at all, it's the immune system reacting to the environment (pollen, dust mites, humidity). So the Zesty Paws skin range splits two ways: one comes at it through immune support, the other from the skin itself. Which one you pick depends on whether the main concern is itching, or dryness, shedding and poor coat condition.
Two approaches, three products
- From the immune health - Aller-Immune Bites: EpiCor® Pets fermentate + colostrum + astragalus root + six gut probiotic strains, made for environmental and seasonal sensitivities. Both flavours share the same formula, so if your dog reacts to chicken or peanut, go for the lamb version. This is the dog allergy supplement most of our customers buy.
- The stepped-up senior version - Senior Advanced Aller-Immune Bites: more EpiCor® than the adult version, double the probiotics at 1 billion CFU, plus PreforPro® prebiotic, salmon oil omega-3 and quercetin. For senior dogs whose seasonal sensitivities have become more noticeable.
- From the skin side - Itch Relief Bites: AlaskOmega® fish oil omega-3 + cod liver oil + vitamins E and C + zinc + biotin, aimed at skin health and moisture. Start here for dry skin, shedding and a dull coat.
How to choose between the formulas
If the main signs are itching, paw licking and seasonal flare-ups, go with the Aller-Immune Bites. If it's mostly dry skin, flaking and poor coat quality, go with the Itch Relief Bites. If you're seeing both, ask your vet whether combining the products is appropriate, and check the combined ingredients and daily amounts. Feeding goes by weight: Up to 11 kg - 1 chew daily. For the first few days, start with half the amount.
Common questions
How long before you notice anything?
An immune supplement is not medicine for itching, and Zesty Paws suggests feeding it daily for 4 to 6 weeks before assessing the results. If your dog has scratched the skin raw, or you can see redness or hair loss, see your vet first to rule out skin conditions and parasites.
Does it work for food sensitivities too?
This range is made for environmental and seasonal sensitivities. If you suspect food is behind it, start with the diet (an elimination trial); supplements are support alongside that.
Is there a cat version?
There is. Cat Aller-Immune Bites and the mousse version follow the same EpiCor® approach, over in the cat section.
After more shine in the coat? Have a look at the Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil in the Skin & Coat range. NanaPaws is an authorised Zesty Paws retailer in Hong Kong, and the batch and expiry date are listed on the product page.
